Real Manuka Honey
Manuka Honey
Authentic New Zealand Mānuka Honey is made by a bee that collects nectar from the Mānuka tree, a tree endemic to New Zealand. Unlike other honey, New Zealand Mānuka Honey has high levels of Methylglyoxal (MGO) which gives it the unique properties that make it so special.
What is Real Manuka Honey?
Harvested during a very short period of 2-6 weeks from Mānuka trees located in some of the most remote regions of New Zealand, authentic New Zealand Mānuka Honey is some of the rarest in the world. It also has a unique color and flavor, unlike any other honey in the world. Read more…

Gold Standard: UMF™
UMF™ (Unique Manuka Factor) is 3rd party certified, guaranteeing that products carrying the UMF mark contain a minimum level of all three of the key compounds, and ensure that it’s genuine, monofloral Manuka Honey (Leptosperin, DHA, and MGO). UMF™ was developed by a trade group of scientists and consumer protection advocates (UMFHA) to ensure quality and purity standards.
Silver Standard: MGO
Short for Methylglyoxal, MGO is one of the three key chemical markers as measured by UMFHA of Manuka Honey. As Dr. James Gawenis, the scientist who contributed to a recent Good Morning America investigation of Manuka Honey said: “If it doesn’t have the MGO levels then you may as well buy sweet clover honey for less than a tenth of the price you’re paying for Manuka Honey.” While MGO is viewed as a very important marker for Manuka’s non-peroxide activity, on its own does not ensure genuine, monofloral Manuka Honey (could be multi-floral honey).
Lacking Standard: almost anything else!
Logically, it would seem that a Manuka Honey labeled with numbers like 12, 16, or 24+ would possess higher bioactivity than a UMF™ 5, 10, or 15+, right? Those words, numbers, and symbols were created by marketers to sound meaningful, though they don’t adhere to any independent standard. The truth is, they may or may not offer detectable levels of the unique compounds that constitute Real Manuka Honey.
